IT Internships in Jaffna: A Student's Guide

Every year, students and new graduates across the Northern Province search for IT internships in Jaffna: industrial training for a degree, a first step into software development, or a way to build a portfolio before applying to larger companies. This guide covers how to find an internship at a Jaffna IT company, what to prepare, and what companies (including us) actually look for.

When to start looking

Start two to three months before your training period begins. Most IT companies in Jaffna are small teams that can only mentor a few interns at a time, so places fill up early around university and college training periods. If your course gives you fixed dates, include them in your first message: it saves a round of emails.

Which companies to approach

Search Google Maps for "software company" and "IT company" in Jaffna, then look at each company's website and portfolio. Look for:

  • Work you want to learn. If you want to be a developer, choose a company that builds software and apps, not one that mainly does printing or design.
  • A real team. You learn far more from experienced developers reviewing your code than from working alone.
  • Live projects. Interns who work on real client projects leave with stronger CVs than those given practice tasks.

Send a short, personal email to each company rather than one message copied to everyone.

What to send

  • A one-page CV with your course, year, skills and the dates you are available.
  • Links to your work. A GitHub profile, a small project, a design portfolio or a website you built. One finished project is worth more than a long list of technologies.
  • Two or three sentences on what you want to learn and why that company.

Skills that help you stand out

You do not need to know everything. For a software development internship, these help most:

  • Basic HTML, CSS and JavaScript, and one back-end language such as PHP, Python or Java.
  • Using Git: committing, branching and opening a pull request.
  • SQL basics: tables, joins and simple queries.
  • For UI/UX roles, a few screens designed in Figma with your reasoning.
  • For digital marketing roles, a social media page or blog you have grown yourself.

Just as important: asking questions, writing clear messages and finishing what you start.

Preparing for the interview

Expect to talk through something you have built: why you made the choices you did and what you would change. You may get a small practical task. Be honest about what you do not know yet. Interviewers are looking for people who can learn, not people who already know everything.

Making the most of your internship

  • Keep notes of what you learn each week. They are useful for your training report and your next interview.
  • Ask for code reviews and act on the feedback.
  • Ask permission to list the projects you worked on in your portfolio.
  • Ask for a reference or letter at the end.
