IT Companies in Jaffna: A Buyer's Checklist

Search for IT companies in Jaffna and you will find a long list of names: software houses, web designers, freelancers and branches of Colombo firms. The list is easy to find. Choosing the right one for your project is the hard part. This guide is the checklist we would use ourselves if we were hiring a software company in Jaffna, written from the other side of hundreds of proposals and project kick-offs.

We are one of those companies, so we will not pretend to give you a neutral ranking of our neighbours. What we can give you is a fair way to compare any of them, us included.

1. Start with what you actually need built

"IT company" covers very different work. Before you shortlist anyone, write down which of these you need:

  • A website for a shop, school, clinic or business: mostly design, content and good hosting. See website design and development.
  • An online store with payments, stock and delivery: see e-commerce development.
  • A mobile app on Android and iOS: see mobile app development.
  • A business system such as billing, POS, inventory, HR or an office workflow: this is custom software development, and it needs a team that writes real back-end code, not just page builders.
  • Branding and graphic design only: a design studio may suit you better than a software company.

Many Jaffna IT companies do all of these, but most are genuinely strong in one or two. Ask each company which of their recent projects is closest to yours.

2. Ask to see live work, not screenshots

A portfolio page full of mock-ups tells you very little. Ask for links to websites and apps that are live today, and open them on your phone. Check whether they load quickly, whether the contact forms work and whether the client is still using the system a year later.

For business systems, which usually sit behind a login, ask for a short screen-share demo and the name of a client you can speak to. A company that has delivered real systems will usually arrange this without fuss. You can browse our portfolio the same way.

3. Check who will build it

Ask whether the work is done by an in-house team in Jaffna, by freelancers, or passed on to another company. All three can work, but you should know which you are paying for. Questions worth asking:

  • Who will be my day-to-day contact, and who writes the code?
  • What happens to my project if that person leaves?
  • Can I meet the team or visit the office?

4. Get the price in writing, broken into stages

A single number on WhatsApp is not a quote. A good proposal splits the work into stages (design, build, testing, launch), lists what is included and what is not, and shows the payment schedule. Compare like with like: one quote may include hosting, a year of support and content entry, another may not.

If you want a realistic range before you talk to anyone, try our project cost estimator. It gives an instant LKR range for websites, stores, apps and custom software.

5. Make sure you will own what you pay for

This is the question most buyers forget. Before you sign, confirm in writing that:

  • the domain name is registered in your name;
  • you will receive the source code and admin logins at handover;
  • you can move hosting to another provider later if you choose.

A company that refuses any of these is building a dependency, not a product.

6. Ask about support after launch

Software needs updates, security patches and the occasional fix. Ask what support is included, how you report a problem, how quickly they respond and what it costs after the first period. "24/7 support" means little unless they can tell you exactly who answers. Our hosting and maintenance page lists what we include so you can compare.

7. Local matters more than you might think

Working with an IT company in Jaffna has practical advantages that are easy to overlook:

  • Language. Staff and customers often prefer Tamil. A local team can build Tamil and English interfaces and train your staff in the language they work in.
  • Meetings in person. Requirements are clearer when you can sit down together, especially for office and government systems.
  • Understanding local processes. Divisional Secretariat workflows, school administration and local payment habits are easier to get right when the team knows them first-hand.

A quick red-flag list

  • No written proposal or contract.
  • Full payment requested up front.
  • No live examples of similar work.
  • The domain or hosting will be in the company's name, not yours.
  • Promises of "first page on Google in a week".
